Get Constable
Simon Carter
19th January - 1st March
Get Constable was an exhibition of new works by painter Simon Carter. Simon Carter’s practice is firmly based within an art historical tradition; where the process of painting and drawing are used to negotiate our multi-dimensional world, in advance of being transposed on to two planes via the application of tone, shape and colour. Conventional considerations as well asthe physical use of the paint: the laying; scraping back; and repainting, complete the final picture. An obsessive process
that naturally results in series, and the returning to subjects; a place, a particular view, or number of linking objects in an attempt to‘...get something that is fresh, coherent and true.’ This new body of work for exhibition in Ipswich challenges the inevitable subject, or ‘subjects’ of Constable. Exposing
familiar vistas and shapes to Carter’s own painterly treatment, where vibrancy of colour and boldness of shape develop upon the textures and surfaces produced by Suffolk’s original natural painter.
