LYNDALL PHELPS: tenderest white

20 January - 03 March
GALLERY 1, The Town Hall Galleries

tenderest white was a direct response to the architecture of the Town Hall Galleries. Lyndall Phelps is fascinated by the dominance of circular forms in Gallery 1, most noticeable in the central glazed dome but also in the decorative white plasterwork of floral motifs and organic patterns on the ceiling.

Using the Victorian architecture and decorative detailing of the gallery as a starting point, Lyndall echoed these forms, repeating them in the space to create a unique site-specific installation.

tenderest white also drew on Lyndall's other interests, such as the writings of Gertrude Jekyll,
the influential garden designer. For this exhibition Lyndall used Jekyll's book Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden and referenced her many poetic descriptions of white.

Mechanically fabricated plastic doilies, were transformed using labour intensive production processes and placed alongside the hand drawn, to reflect the grandness of the interior space.
