LEONARD McCOMB R.A.
Drawings, Paintings and Sculpture
Wolsey Art Gallery
23 April - 17 July 2005
This was a major exhibition of work by Leonard McComb from the last 30 years to the present day.
The works on display ranged from intimate drawings, large-scale paintings to life-size golden sculpture. His intricate, decorative and striking work included portraits, botanical studies and
French landscapes. These intensely observed works were drawn from life.
He says, “Everything I make is a portrait, whether I paint a human head, a flower or an object on a table”.
Born in Glasgow, McComb studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1956 - 1959.
He has exhibited widely in many important solo, group and touring shows, exhibiting at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery, London, and more recently the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
His work is held in public collections including Tate Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.
In 1990 McComb was elected Royal Academician. In 1995 was elected Keeper of the
Royal Academy, placing him in charge of the Royal Academy Schools until 1998.
Leonard lives and works in London.
This was a collaborative exhibition with the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh
