Mark Dixon working on Suspended

Mark Dixon, Suspended

Suspended - Mark Dixon

Artist in residence 19 August 2004 – 28 August 2004
WAG at St Mary-at-the-Quay

This installation by Mark Dixon became a twelve foot high suspended paper structure, which emerged over ten days. Using new media, visitors were able to move, record and view themselves around and through the installation.

The work was suspended from above and was mobile, constantly changing its shape from day to day, as Mark worked on it and visitors moved around it. The piece was based on a maze design from the Roman period, and later adapted by Cistercian monks who used it as a ritual walkway. This design can also be found on a church floor in Lincolnshire and Chartres Cathedral, the reason Mark wanted to create this work in St Mary’s Church.
